We sometimes tend to think that learning is mainly something that happens during childhood or at school. As we grow older, we may believe that our brain becomes less flexible, that certain things are now “too difficult,” or simply that we are “not made for it.”
Neuroscience tells us a much more encouraging story.
Our brain has a remarkable ability: it changes according to what we do, repeat, experience, and learn.
This ability has a name: neuroplasticity.
And it stays with us throughout our lives.
🌿 Learning physically changes the brain
When we learn something new — a language, a movement, a song, a professional skill, or even a new way of thinking — different networks of neurons become active.
With repetition and practice, some of the connections between these neurons can become stronger. The networks involved gradually become more efficient.
In other words, learning is not simply about “storing information.”
It involves changes in the way our brain functions and, at certain levels, in the way it is organised.
This is one of the manifestations of neuroplasticity.
Imagine a forest where no path exists yet.
The first time you walk through it, you have to find your way. You move slowly, hesitate, and sometimes have to turn back.
But if you regularly take the same route, a path gradually begins to appear.
Learning works a little like this: repetition progressively makes certain neural pathways easier to use.
🧠 Why does learning feel so difficult at first?
Starting something new can feel uncomfortable.
You try to speak a new language and have to search for every word. You learn to use new software and every action requires concentration. You start playing an instrument and your fingers seem completely unable to do what you want them to do.
This is normal.
At the beginning of the learning process, a task requires a great deal of attention and cognitive resources. We have to consciously think about what we are doing.
With practice, some of these processes become faster and more automatic.
Think about reading.
Today, you probably do not consciously decipher every letter in this sentence. Yet as a child, recognising letters, associating them with sounds, and understanding words required considerable effort.
Your brain learned.
🍂 Making mistakes is part of learning
We are often taught to see mistakes as something negative.
For the brain, however, a mistake can provide valuable information.
When the result we obtain does not match what we expected, our brain can detect the difference and gradually adjust its predictions or strategies.
The goal is not to deliberately seek failure, of course. But it is important to understand that:
make a mistake → receive feedback → correct → try again
is part of effective learning.
This is also why clear and timely feedback is often more useful than repeatedly practising something incorrectly.
🌙 The brain continues learning while we sleep
Here is one aspect of learning that we often underestimate:
Rest is part of the process.
During sleep, the brain continues processes that contribute to the consolidation of certain memories.
This means that studying for hours while systematically sacrificing sleep can actually become counterproductive.
A learning session should therefore not simply look like:
learn → learn → learn.
It is closer to:
learn → take a break → sleep → return to the information.
The brain needs time to stabilise some of what it has just learned.
☕ Why revisiting information is better than learning everything at once
Most of us are familiar with last-minute cramming.
It can sometimes help us remember enough information temporarily for an upcoming exam or deadline. But when we want to build more lasting knowledge, another strategy is generally much more effective:
spacing out our learning.
Instead of studying for two hours in one sitting, we return to the information regularly over several days.
And there is another important element: instead of simply rereading something, try to retrieve the information from memory before looking at the answer.
For example, after reading a chapter, close the book and ask yourself:
“What are the three main things I have just learned?”
The effort required to retrieve information from memory is itself a powerful learning exercise.
🌲 Attention: the gateway to learning
We can sit in front of a book for an hour without actually learning very much.
Why?
Because being exposed to information and genuinely paying attention to it are two different things.
Notifications, phones, conversations, videos, and constantly switching between tasks can fragment our attention.
Learning therefore benefits from an environment where the brain has the opportunity to truly focus.
This does not necessarily mean studying for three hours in complete silence.
A relatively short period of genuine concentration can be much more productive than a long session filled with interruptions.
✨ What about motivation?
Our brain's reward systems also participate in learning.
Dopamine, which is often oversimplified as the “pleasure hormone,” plays several roles in motivation, reward-based learning, and the way our brain updates its expectations.
A huge and distant goal can quickly feel overwhelming.
Smaller, visible steps can make it easier to stay engaged.
Instead of thinking:
“I need to learn English.”
you might decide:
“This week, I am going to learn and use ten new expressions.”
The brain now has a concrete and observable objective.
And every small step becomes part of something larger.
❄️ Can we really learn at any age?
Yes.
The brain retains a capacity for plasticity throughout adulthood.
That does not mean that everything is equally easy at 50 as it is at 5. Some forms of learning are particularly sensitive to certain periods of development, and several cognitive processes change as we age.
But “more difficult” certainly does not mean “impossible.”
Adults also have important advantages: previous knowledge, experience, learning strategies, a better understanding of context, and the ability to connect new information with things they already know.
Starting a new language at 40, learning to draw at 60, or discovering a musical instrument at 70 still represents genuine learning for the brain.
There is no age at which curiosity suddenly becomes useless.
🌿 How can we learn more effectively?
A few principles from learning research can be applied very simply:
- Space out learning sessions instead of concentrating everything into one day.
- Test yourself rather than simply rereading information.
- Accept mistakes and use feedback to adjust your understanding.
- Protect your attention by reducing unnecessary distractions.
- Get enough sleep, because sleep and memory are closely connected.
- Connect new information to things you already know.
- Alternate learning with breaks instead of constantly pushing yourself.
There is no magical method that allows the brain to learn everything instantly.
But there are ways to work with the way our brain functions rather than against it.
🌲 The brain is a forest that continues to evolve
This may be my favourite way to think about learning.
Our brain is not something fixed.
It is shaped by our experiences, habits, learning, and environment.
Of course, every new piece of knowledge does not literally create a tiny pathway inside our head. But the image of a forest beautifully illustrates the principle: some neural pathways become strengthened through experience and repetition, while the brain continues to adapt.
So the next time you start something new and think:
“I'm really bad at this.”
perhaps try replacing that thought with:
“My brain is still learning.”
The difference matters.
One describes an identity that appears permanent.
The other describes a process.
And learning is precisely a process of transformation.
